| WAXING... WHAT
THIS IS -
Waxing is a method
of hair removal where warm or hot wax is spread on the skin,
and a cotton or cloth
strip is pressed down on top. When the wax cools, the cloth
strip is firmly removed
with a quick peeling action that pulls off the wax and any
hair that was embedded
into it. Waxing removes both the hair and its root. Many
women rely on making
an appointment with a professional salon to have their
bodies waxed, but
some women are comfortable doing this themselves at home.
There are several
take-home waxing kits available on the market.
HOW LONG IT LASTS
-
Eventually, the hair
root will grow back to become visible again in about 2 to 3
weeks. Then, you’ll
have to wait another 2 weeks or so before you can wax the
same area again.
WHERE CAN YOU WAX
-
Anywhere, really. Usually
women will wax their legs, underarms, bikini area, and
special areas on the
face (upper lip and eyebrows).
DEPILATORIES...
WHAT THIS IS -
Depilatory lotions, gels
and creams are powerful chemicals that dissolve surface
hair. America’s most successful
depilatory lotion, NAIR™, contains the powerful
active ingredient calcium
thioglycolate, which destroys the protein structure of
hair, reducing texture and
strength. However, many people suffer adverse skin
reactions to such chemicals.
They often irritate the skin, and can be smelly to use.
HOW LONG IT LASTS -
Like waxing, the hair root
grows back in about 2 to 3 weeks, but you won’t have to
wait another 2 weeks to
depilate again.
WHERE CAN YOU DISSOLVE
-
Legs only for most
girls. Often, skin in the underarm or bikini areas, and on the
face is too sensitive
for such chemicals.
ELECTROLYSIS...
WHAT THIS IS -
Electrolysis is a method
of hair removal that uses a needle-shaped electrode for
sending electrical
currents into a hair's shaft and root. This distorts hair growth,
which can permanently
"kill" a hair after several treatments. Normally, you will go
to a certified technician
for treatment sessions, but there are also many take-home
systems for sale in
beauty supply houses and drug stores.
HOW LONG IT LASTS
-
Depending on the individual,
weeks for some; a few months for others. Repeated
sessions DO NOT guarantee
permanent hair removal.
WHERE CAN YOU SHOCK
-
Anywhere on the body.
This is not a painful procedure to experience, but it is
costly. ($60.00/hr.
and up), plus...your could grow back. Than what? More costs.
LASER HAIR REMOVAL...
WHAT THIS IS -
In April 1995, The
ThermoLase Corporation (www.thermo.com/subsid/tlz.html)
was the first company
to receive FDA clearance for marketing a laser that would
remove unwanted hair.
The SoftLight & trade;, a low energy Neodymium Yag
laser, was designed
to remove hair with a specially formulated cream. SoftLight
treatments are available
at Spa Thira Salons across the country and in Europe.
ThermoLase also has
been licensing SoftLight to physicians as well
HOW LASERS WORK
-
A patron relaxes while
a SoftLight technician first cleans and waxes the areas of the
body where the laser
will be used; this opens the pores of the skin. A special
carbon-based lotion
is next massaged into the skin which penetrates the hair ducts,
and any excess is
wiped away. SoftLight then begins its work, passing laser energy
over the skin and
down into the hair ducts, heating the carbon remaining in the
follicles. This disables
the patron’s hair follicles without harming the skin. Since
SoftLight is scanned
over areas of the skin, rather than on individual follicle, large
areas of the body
(like legs and the back) can be easily treated. More than one
SoftLight treatment
is usually necessary to achieve the desired results, depending
on the patron’s hair
density and growth cycle.
HOW LONG IT TAKES
and HOW MUCH IT COSTS -
Laser treatments are
fast and usually painless, but not cheap. Removing hair from
an upper lip or underarm
takes about 10 minutes, and a back or leg takes about 45
minutes. The average
costs are about $300-600 per body part (an upper lip is $400,
a lower leg $600),
and packages to treat several areas start at $2,000. Expensive!!
NO EVIDENCE THAT LASERS
REALLY WORK -
The FDA also recently approved
two other lasers for market use, but to date;
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO EVIDENCE
that lasers can create a permanent
reduction or end of hair
growth.
